GHK-Cu

A naturally occurring copper peptide with powerful anti-aging and wound healing properties

GHK-Cu is a naturally occurring tripeptide found in human plasma, saliva, and urine. It consists of glycine, histidine, and lysine bound to a copper ion. It is one of the most studied anti-aging peptides, with research showing it can reset gene expression in aging cells, promote wound healing, and stimulate collagen and elastin production.

Mechanism of action

GHK-Cu works by binding to cell surface receptors and modulating gene expression. Research by Loren Pickart showed it can reset the gene expression of aging fibroblasts to a more youthful pattern, affecting over 4,000 genes. It promotes the synthesis of collagen, elastin, and glycosaminoglycans, and activates antioxidant enzymes including superoxide dismutase.

Benefits discussed in research

  • Stimulates collagen and elastin production for skin rejuvenation
  • Promotes wound healing and tissue regeneration
  • Resets gene expression patterns in aging cells
  • Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects
  • Promotes hair follicle growth and reduces hair loss
  • Neuroprotective properties

notes
Topical application is the most common route for skin anti-aging benefits. Subcutaneous injection is used for systemic anti-aging and wound healing. Intranasal use is being explored for neuroprotection. Copper peptides can be inactivated by vitamin C — avoid combining topically.

Side effects and safety

  • Skin irritation with topical use at high concentrations
  • Temporary skin darkening (rare)
  • Injection site reactions
  • Generally very well tolerated

Frequently asked questions

Can I use GHK-Cu topically on my face?

Yes, and this is actually the most common way people use it. GHK-Cu is one of the most researched anti-aging skincare ingredients available. You will find it in high-end serums and creams at concentrations of 0.1 to 1%. It is generally gentle enough for daily use, though very high concentrations can cause temporary irritation. Start with a lower concentration if you have sensitive skin.

Does GHK-Cu help with hair loss?

Yes, and this is one of its more exciting applications. GHK-Cu has been shown to stimulate hair follicles and increase their size, which means thicker, stronger hair growth. It is used both as a topical scalp treatment (mixed into a serum or carrier) and as a systemic injection for more significant hair loss. The research is promising for both male and female pattern hair loss.
