MOTS-c vs Epitalon

Compare mitochondrial and longevity research pathways.

MOTS-c

A mitochondria-derived peptide for metabolic health and longevity

MOTS-c is a fascinating peptide because it comes from a completely unexpected place: your mitochondria. Mitochondria are the energy-producing structures inside your cells — often called the "powerhouses of the cell." It turns out they also produce signaling molecules that communicate with the rest of your body. MOTS-c is one of those signals. It has been shown to improve how your body handles blood sugar, boost exercise endurance, and extend lifespan in animal studies. Researchers are particularly excited about it for healthy aging.

Mechanism of action

When your cells are under stress (from exercise, fasting, or aging), MOTS-c travels from the mitochondria to the cell nucleus and flips on a master energy switch called AMPK. Think of AMPK as your body's fuel economy system — it tells cells to burn stored energy more efficiently and stop wasting resources. This improves how your muscles use glucose, reduces inflammation, and makes your cells more resilient to stress. It essentially mimics some of the benefits of exercise and caloric restriction at the cellular level.

Benefits discussed in research

  • Improves insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism
  • Enhances exercise performance and endurance
  • Anti-inflammatory effects
  • May extend lifespan
  • Supports healthy aging
  • Activates AMPK pathway

Dosing information

For educational and research purposes only. Not medical advice.

typical
1–10 mg once every 5 days
range
1–10 mg per dose
frequency
Once every 5 days
route
Subcutaneous injection
cycleLength
8–12 weeks
notes
Common dosing ranges from 1–10 mg once every 5 days depending on individual goals and response. Start at the lower end and adjust based on how you feel. Relatively new peptide with limited long-term human data.

Reconstitution and storage

Remove the caps from the bacteriostatic water (BAC water) and MOTS-c vial and clean both stoppers with alcohol swabs. Draw 100 units (1 mL) of bacteriostatic water into a syringe and inject it into the MOTS-c vial. Swirl gently until fully dissolved — do not shake. The solution is now 10 mg/mL.

Lyophilized powder: store in a cool, dry place. Once reconstituted: refrigerate and use within 30 days.

Side effects and safety

  • Limited data available
  • Injection site reactions
  • Generally appears well tolerated in studies

Frequently asked questions

How is MOTS-c different from other longevity peptides?

Most peptides are encoded in the DNA inside your cell's nucleus. MOTS-c is unusual — it comes from the DNA inside your mitochondria, the energy-producing structures in your cells. This makes it one of the few peptides that directly communicates between your mitochondria and the rest of your body, which is why it has such a direct effect on energy metabolism and exercise performance.

How do I reconstitute a 10 mg MOTS-c vial?

Add 1 mL (100 units) of bacteriostatic water to the 10 mg vial. This gives a concentration of 10 mg/mL. For a 1 mg dose draw 10 units; for a 2 mg dose draw 20 units; for a 5 mg dose draw 50 units; for a 10 mg dose draw 100 units on a U-100 insulin syringe. Use within 30 days once reconstituted.

Epitalon

A telomere-lengthening peptide for cellular longevity

Epitalon is a tiny four-amino-acid peptide that has been studied for longevity for over 40 years, primarily by Russian scientists. It is based on a natural peptide produced by your pineal gland — a small gland in your brain that also controls your sleep-wake cycle. The big claim to fame for Epitalon is its ability to activate an enzyme called telomerase, which helps maintain the protective caps on your DNA. Those caps (telomeres) get shorter as you age, and shorter telomeres are linked to aging and disease.

Mechanism of action

Here is a helpful analogy: your chromosomes are like shoelaces, and telomeres are the plastic tips at the end that stop them from fraying. Every time a cell divides, those tips get a little shorter. Epitalon activates telomerase, the enzyme that rebuilds those tips. It also helps regulate melatonin production, which is why many users notice improved sleep quality alongside the longevity benefits.

Benefits discussed in research

  • Activates telomerase enzyme to lengthen telomeres
  • Regulates the sleep-wake cycle via melatonin
  • Antioxidant properties
  • May extend lifespan (demonstrated in animal studies)
  • Supports immune function
  • Normalizes hormonal function

Dosing information

For educational and research purposes only. Not medical advice.

typical
5 mg once daily (standard cycle)
range
1–10 mg/day
frequency
Once daily for 10–20 days per cycle
route
Subcutaneous injection
cycleLength
10–20 days, 1–2 times per year
notes
Standard dose is 5 mg once daily for 10–20 days. Lower doses of 1–5 mg are used for milder effects. Anti-aging protocols sometimes use up to 10 mg once daily. Treatment cycles are repeated 1–2 times per year with several months between cycles. Evening dosing is preferred due to its effects on melatonin.

Reconstitution and storage

Remove the caps from the bacteriostatic water (BAC water) and Epitalon vial and clean both stoppers with alcohol swabs. Draw 100 units (1 mL) of bacteriostatic water into a syringe and inject it gently into the Epitalon vial. Swirl gently until the peptide is fully dissolved — do not shake. The solution is now 10 mg/mL.

Lyophilized powder: store in a cool, dry, dark place for up to 1–2 years. Once reconstituted: refrigerate at 2–8°C and use within 20–30 days to maintain potency.

Side effects and safety

  • Generally very well tolerated
  • Mild fatigue (rare)
  • Injection site reactions

Frequently asked questions

Does Epitalon actually lengthen telomeres in humans?

Animal and some human studies suggest Epitalon can activate telomerase. However, large-scale human clinical trials are still limited. The research is promising but should be interpreted cautiously.

How do I reconstitute a 10 mg Epitalon vial?

Add 1 mL (100 units) of bacteriostatic water to the 10 mg vial. This gives a concentration of 10 mg/mL. For a 1 mg dose draw 10 units; for a 5 mg dose draw 50 units; for a 10 mg dose draw 100 units on a U-100 insulin syringe. Use the reconstituted solution within 20–30 days.

How often should I run an Epitalon cycle?

The standard approach is one 10–20 day cycle, one to two times per year, with several months off in between. This mirrors the way it has been used in the Russian research that forms the backbone of Epitalon science. Continuous daily use is not recommended.
