LL-37 is your body's own natural antibiotic. It is the only cathelicidin peptide that humans produce, and it is part of your innate immune system — the first line of defense that kicks in before your body has time to build a specific immune response. It kills bacteria, viruses, and fungi by punching holes in their cell membranes. It is found in your skin, lungs, and gut, and it also plays a role in wound healing. Researchers are interested in it as a potential alternative to conventional antibiotics, especially for drug-resistant infections.
LL-37 works like a molecular weapon against pathogens. Bacteria have a negative charge on their outer membrane, and LL-37 has a positive charge — so it is attracted to bacteria and sticks to them. Once attached, it punches holes in the bacterial membrane, causing the cell to fall apart. It also acts as an alarm signal to the rest of the immune system, recruiting more immune cells to the area. In wound healing, it promotes new blood vessel growth and helps cells migrate to close the wound.
